Dave did well but he’s gotta roll with it

Apart from age and probably owning a few of their CDs, there might not be much to support my assertion that David Cameron and Oasis have a lot in common.
They have.
But Oasis have a power that Cameron has not (and we are not just talking decibels.)
Both have past glories to trade on – Mrs Thatcher and “What’s the Story (Morning Glory)”.
Both can evoke the spirit of heroes – Churchill and John Lennon.
Both have recent history to push to one side – Major/sleaze/IDS/Howard and most of the last few albums.
Both face accusations of style and hype over substance.
Both are trying to appear relevant against the background of rapidly shifting sands – the global financial crisis and changing musical tastes.
Both need to keep their old fan base happy while acquiring a new audience.
But Oasis can and have done something Dave can’t.
Dave did well yesterday in breaking through the media wall of sound on the financial crisis and the actions of those with – rather than hoping for – the power to tackle it.
He turned the “novice” charge round and focussed on his values and what he values, echoing Gordon’s “I know what I am, I know what I want to do” presentation a week earlier (was it only a week ago? A week REALLY is a long time in politics!)
Some commentators complain that voters still don’t know much about his Party or his policies. But, Dave’s strategists would counter, neither did they know much about Tony Blair in the mid-nineties but it worked for him! In fact it worked for him because he did NOT talk about Labour, he introduced New Labour as as adjunct to his personal brand.
Oasis may have gone digital long after Dave adopted it, but they can use digital in a way Dave can’t. Without giving it away, Oasis have allowed us to cut through the hype and listen to the new album ahead of purchase. Dave can’t show us how he would deal with the financial crisis were he in power. He can only talk about it.

It’s a little known fact that my wedding march was Wonderwall. Some might also say that is a sad fact, but there you go.
