A quiet night at the British Press Awards

To the British Press Awards last night. A bit more sedate and non-violent than previous years when we got used to Piers Morgan and Jeremy Clarkson squaring up to each other, Bob Geldof haranguing everyone, stage invasion protests over Iraq and general football-style chanting and rivalry. As we all politely applauded I was left wishing for a bit of the old spicy behaviour and wondering why the lady in the gold bubble dress on the next table had to visit the loo every ten minutes.
Â
Interestingly for a press awards it was hosted by a broadcaster, Channel 4’s Jon Snow, himself an active blogger and podcaster, who asked ‘Am I am member of ‘the press?’ and ‘Do we really have any domains any more?’ and made the point that perhaps those who speak for and oversee the press should reflect what many newspapers are doing in the digital space. I only talked to one journalist who did not bemoan their declining circulations, and that was a national Sunday paper (in truth, who is going to spend five hours scrolling through all those lovely leisure and glossy lifestyle supplements online).
Â
Best moment: Jon Snow rather patronisingly asking Hugh Cudlip’s widow if she knew what a podcast cast was and did she have a computer. Answer, yes and three.

(NB If you didn’t see it, check out Ian Reeves’ article ‘New stars of the newsroom’ in this week’s Media Guardian, on how newspapers like The Daily Telegraph and The Sun are developing their broadcast news offering).
