Dealing with difficult interviews/looking for a job in digital?

Whatever the why’s and wherefore’s of today’s ITV results (and since I wrote this on my Blackberry and emailed it to myself earlier this morning, they turn out not to be great), the performance by ITV Chairman Michael Grade was a case study for any leader in how to handle a hostile – and at times OTT – interview well.
Rarely does a CEO get a five minute grilling over his results on The Today Programme. Even more rarefor the interview to be conducted by a journalist from a rival, with whom you have history.
Greg Wood, a good broadcaster without the Humphrey-esque verbal violence, really went for him, throwing tripwires under every step and even beating him up over phone in scandals for which the Beeb themselves have come in for criticism. It almost got surreal when Wood attacked Grad over the hire of Peter ‘Royal Row’ Fincham, the former BBC 1 controller who quit taking the rap for a BBC screw-up.
Grade remained calm but in control. He stuck to his key messages. He didn’t rise to bait or baiting. He didn’t sound arrogant or talk down to the listeners. He wasn’t drawn into taking a – justified – pop back at the interviewer over the BBC’s own woes. A model interview under the toughest conditions. Worth a listen by any communications student or public figure facing similarly tough media challenges.
While I’m online, let me take this opportunity to invite anyone out there in PR-land in the UK with a solid digital PR and social media background to send me their CV. My email is cbyrne@webershandwick.com . We are hiring in that area. Discretion assured.
