I think it is not said enough and not clearly enough that the physical newspaper and magazine can be loved by readers as much for their design and how they integrate into your daily life (as you say, spread out over a desk or table) as for their pure content. It is a different reader experience to consume media online. I love the sound of a magazine dropping through the letterbox on a Friday or Saturday morning, and handing over the Financial Times to the girl in the shop. Agree with this wholeheartedly.
